We link you to find lovely rebozos from Midwife Tema Mercado, the owner of La Matriz, who is also a Spinning Babies® Approved Trainer. The company of Spinning Babies® no longer sells rebozos.
Rebozos from La Matriz are woven in the ancient town of Mitla, Oaxaca. Familia Martinez Mendez shares the following about their rebozos.
We learned how to weave rebozos as taught by our ancestors who have left this as our heritage. We first learned to weave using a telar de cintura, waist loom. We now use a tela de chicoto, foot pedal loom. Our foot pedal looms do not require any artificial or combustible energy. The loom is activated by our foot, hand and eye coordination. Our thoughts are also an important part of the process. We are skilled at making rebozos as well as other fine textiles. Our rebozos are 100% cotton. A skilled weaver can make approximately two – three 2.7 meter rebozos a day.
Requests for specific variations can’t be accommodated, because each rebozo is created with a unique pattern and/or color combination depending on the cotton that the artisans have available.
- 2 meters 70 centimeters (8 feet 10 inches) in length not including tassels
- The tassels at each end are approximately 15.5 cm / 6 inches
- The collective length is approximately 3 meters long
- Width is 68.5 cm / 27 inches
Please keep in mind that these are artisan made and can be slightly longer, shorter, wider or narrower.
