Salutophysiology in Pregnancy and Birth: From Risk-Focused to Health-Oriented Care

$395.00

A 9-session online course designed for birth professionals to learn how the autonomic nervous system (ANS) supports pregnancy and birth through a salutogenic, neuroscience-informed lens. Earn 18 ANCC-accredited Continuing Education credits while exploring how biology, emotions, and environment interact with the uterus and placenta; it includes trauma-informed communication and therapeutic presence, plus video demonstrations of manual treatments to support parents across pregnancy and birth.

Description

This course introduces birth professionals to Salutophysiology, a health-oriented model of pregnancy and birth care that deepens the Spinning BabiesĀ® approach by focusing on the nervous system, physiology, and the connection between internal and external conditions in pregnancy and birth.

Through eight live sessions and one pre-recorded session led by international midwife and Spinning BabiesĀ® Approved Trainer Anna Maria Rossetti, participants explore how the autonomic nervous system, environment, and emotional safety influence pregnancy, labor, and postpartum outcomes. The program integrates therapeutic presence, empathic communication, and trauma-informed clinical behaviors with physiological birth support, equipping professionals with practical tools to reduce birth trauma and challenge obstetric violence in modern maternity care.

Topics follow the physiology of pregnancy and birth step by step, including the first 1000 days, vagal shift in the second trimester, cortisol and readiness for birth, post-term fetal positioning, myths about big babies, Internal Fetal Rotation (IFR), and pelvic floor neurophysiology, alongside video demonstrations of manual treatments.

Over these nine months, participants learn within an international cohort of birth professionals committed to creating safer, more respectful birth experiences and strengthening a salutogenic culture of pregnancy and childbirth care.

After this course, professionals will be able to:

  • Relearn physiology through a neuroscientific, salutogenic approach
  • Shift the care paradigm from fear to trust
  • Recognise the inner competences of mothers, parents, fathers, and babies from early pregnancy
  • Understand how nervous systems interact with the uterus and the environment
  • Strengthen inclusive, respectful communication; examine prejudices and motivation; support reproductive choices
  • Strengthen the comprehension and motivation of people on the necessity of the paradigm shift
  • Understand how salutophysiology and Spinning BabiesĀ® together can help create a renaissance of midwifery

Additional information

What is Salutophysiology?

Salutophysiology is a health-oriented approach to pregnancy and birth care that shifts the focus from risk to the conditions that support physiology to function well.

Rather than looking only at what could go wrong, this perspective considers how the nervous system, environment, emotional experience, and relationships all influence how birth unfolds. It invites a more integrated understanding of physiology, one that is responsive, relational, and shaped by how safe and supported a person feels.

What makes this course different from other Spinning BabiesĀ® offerings?

This course sits alongside the Spinning BabiesĀ® approach, widening the lens to focus more deeply on the nervous system, emotional safety, and the environment in which pregnancy and birth unfold.

Rather than focusing on what to do, it explores the conditions that allow physiology to function optimally, and how those conditions are shaped moment to moment, in relationship.

Through a salutogenic framework, you’ll learn how stress and context influence labour, and how to support autonomic balance through your presence, communication, and care.

It offers space for reflection, integration, and conversation over time, supporting a deeper relationship with the physiology of birth.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for birth professionals including and not limited to; midwives, doulas, physicians, nurses, childbirth educators and bodyworkers who want to deepen their understanding of physiology through a health-oriented, neuroscience-informed lens. Whether you’ve studied with Spinning BabiesĀ® before or are completely new to us, if you’re interested in how presence, environment and relational care can help or hinder labor and birth, we invite you to join us.

It may be especially meaningful for those supporting pregnancy and birth in clinical, community, or educational settings.

How long does it take to complete this course?

The course unfolds over nine monthly sessions, each approximately 2 hours long.

This extended format is designed to give you time to reflect, integrate, and apply what you’re learning between sessions, rather than moving quickly through the material.

All sessions are recorded, so you can revisit the material or catch up if you’re unable to attend live.

What topics are covered in this course?

This course explores how the nervous system, environment, and physiology work together throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Topics include:
The role of the autonomic nervous system in pregnancy and labor
How emotional safety and environment influence physiology
The connection between the uterus, placenta, and body systems
Communication and therapeutic presence in care
Step-by-step physiological changes across pregnancy and birth

The course is designed to build a more complete understanding of how birth unfolds within the whole system.

Does this course include any Spinning BabiesĀ® techniques?

This course is not focused on teaching specific techniques from Spinning BabiesĀ®. Instead, it deepens the understanding of physiology that supports the Spinning BabiesĀ® approach.

It offers practical ways to apply this understanding in your work, including recognizing how stress and environment influence pregnancy and labour, and supporting autonomic balance through communication, presence, and relationship.
You may find that it enhances how you use what you already know, supporting a shift from doing techniques to working more responsively with the physiology of birth.

Will I learn about nervous-system-based approaches?

Yes. A central focus of this course is understanding how the autonomic nervous system influences pregnancy and birth.

You’ll explore how stress, safety, environment, and emotional experience interact with physiology, and how this awareness can support more responsive and connected care.
