Reflection on Rising Cesarean Rates | Spinning Babies®

Spinning Babies The article shared the story of an obstetrics team at Rochester General Hospital in New York, which welcomes about 1800 births each year and had once seen very high cesarean rates, especially among healthy, first time parents. Over time, their rates fell dramatically. What made the difference was not a new technology or a complex intervention. It was a shift in the way their staff viewed birth and supported birthing families.

A Spinning Babies® Reflection on a Recent Conversation About Cesarean Birth On November 24th, The New York Times published an article, “These Hospitals Figured Out How to Slash C-Section Rates,” about the rising rate of cesarean births and highlighted the experience of a hospital in New York that has significantly lowered its surgery rate in […]

What Is Physiological First Birth?

Spinning Babies At Spinning Babies®, we believe birth is not something to be managed, it’s something to be supported. We use the phrase physiological first birth to describe our approach: one that prioritizes the body’s innate ability to birth when given balance, space, and respect.

The Paradigm of New Birth

Spinning Babies To interpret by paradigm helps us to explain something that is not actually fully knowable by creating a story map to share an understanding with one another. We are drawn into any paradigm by social agreement first, being raised to think a certain way, or educated to, through school and also conversations.

Can the Forward-leaning Inversion cause placental abruption?

Spinning Babies The incident: A woman pregnant with her sixth baby went rapidly down off a high bed without support present (the bed was the kind you use stairs to get on). Her separated abdominal muscles didn’t protect her anterior placenta as her hands hit the floor with an "oomph." Doing it this way *and this late in pregnancy* is not the recommendation for FLI. We recommend support for the first few times, both going down and coming back up to the kneeling position.

There are complications that come up in pregnancy, and when a rare complication arises it is human nature to look to the unusual events or actions done. The unusual seems logically linked to the unusual, but what is unusual in our awareness may not be the only variable occurring. In the decade we’ve had the […]

Contraction Pattern ROA

Dana writes, “I feel like I am having to relearn what a good contraction pattern looks like. It seems like women who are using the Daily Essentials video are having an early pattern similar to what I would expect from a posterior baby. Short, intense, and close together. A couple times I’ve suggested we go […]
